breeding for excellence

The foundations of "Unfehlbar" (meaning infallible and without fail) came from our Kennel name and breeding German Shepherds. The technology and genetic understanding in breeding the dogs, understanding pedigrees and line breeding, successfully pioneering frozen semen matings and producing live puppies was the foundation that was applied to the AI and ET breeding programmes of Unfehlbar English Red Deer. Animal health, well-being and a hands on approach were natural to Guy as he has always had a high interaction with all his animals.
Guy purchased the bare West Melton 22 ha property approximately 28 km out of Christchurch in 1996 and his first four Hinds in 1999. Since then he has built the farm into a viable deer unit with lush pastures and shelter, capable of running 120 Hinds, 30 Stags and about 100 Weaners. This was only possible with intensive pasture production and irrigation.
The focus of breeding deer since 1999, has been English Red Deer; Pure Woburn, Pure Warham and Pure English Woburn/Warham Deer. Guy has built the herd from the best of existing operating studs and now pride himself in having an extremely well breed, modern, genetic base, which has been enhanced through AI and ET programmes, using carefully selected proven producing Sires and Hinds.
English Red Deer foundations in New Zealand are based on two main parks in England; Warnham Park and Woburn Abby, and a smaller Furzeland Herd
Warnham Park is owned by the Lucas family since 1854. Warnham Park deer hold all the British antler records for length, spread and points. They have made a great contribution to New Zealand Deer since 1982 with imported live Stags and Hinds, and lately with Semen and Embryos. Warnham Stags have consistently grown big multi-point heads and have proven themselves time and time again braking records in hard antler heads and velvet weights.
Woburn Abby is world renown for its red deer. This stud has developed a resident herd in New Zealand at Stanfield. Woburn stags offer multi points which add to the stags trophy potential.
Furzeland English deer herd was purchased in 1992 by Peel Forest from J Henshaw of Devon. This line of deer are well known for their Trophy antler and multi-points.
